Abstract:

We derive the formula of the falling depth and related parameters of an expendable bathythermograph (XBT) probe based on kinematic analysis to calculate the falling depth of an XBT probe in seawater. We also analyze the impact of the weight error of a XBT probe on the calculation result of its falling depth. Experiment shows that the average error of the falling depth is within 2%, as compared with a standard conductancetemperaturedepth instrument.

Key words: expendable bathythermograph, falling depth, conductance-temperature-depth instrument
