Spatiotemporal evolution characteristics and prediction of new quality productivity and economic development level in the Yellow River Basin

Abstract: As an innovation-driven advanced form of productivity, new quality productivity serves as a key engine for promoting high-quality economic development in the Yellow River Basin. Based on the panel data of nine provinces (regions) in the Yellow River Basin from 2013 to 2024, this study systematically analyzes the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics, spatial correlation patterns and future development trends of new quality productivity and economic development level by using the entropy method, coupling coordination degree model, spatial autocorrelation model and grey prediction model. The results show that new quality productivity and economic development level in the basin steadily improved during the study period, presenting a spatial differentiation pattern of “lower reaches > middle reaches > upper reaches.” The coupling coordination degree between the two shifted from barely coordinated to primarily coordinated, though with significant regional disparities—Shandong, Shaanxi and Sichuan are in the leading position, while the upper reaches improved relatively slowly. Furthermore, the coupling coordination degree showed significant positive spatial autocorrelation and agglomeration characteristics, with distinct high-high and low-low clustering patterns. Future predictions indicate a continuous improvement trend in coupling coordination level, although regional imbalances will persist in the long run. Finally, optimization paths are proposed from the perspectives of differentiated development, regional synergy, innovation-driven growth and factor support, providing decision-making references for cultivating new quality productivity and promoting high-quality coordinated economic development in the Yellow River Basin.
