Abstract:

This paper investigates the impact of the laser polarization direction on the photodetachment of a negative hydrogen  ion near a metal surface with the theory of closed orbit. Experimental results show that oscillating amplitude of the photodetachment cross section is maximal when the laser polarization direction is vertical to a metal surface. However, the oscillation amplitude is almost zero when the laser polarization direction is parallel to a metal surface. The oscillation amplitude  is between zero and maximum when the laser polarization direction is between parallel and vertical. The experimental results have certain referential value for the photodetachment of negative ions near a surface.

Key words: photodetachment, metal surface, laser polarization direction
