Research on an evaluation index of urban road intersection congestion based on road condition data

Abstract: In this paper, the total intersection delay time index and the single direction maximum delay time index are proposed.A simplified congestion evaluation index model is established using data acquired from navigation software regarding road condition, queue length, and the number of lanes at each entrance. The applicability of the model is verified against examples of intersections of Beijing. The congestion level of the example intersections is ranked on the basis of the total delay time index and the single direction delay time index.The result is consistent with the actual data. When compared with traditional intersection evaluation indexes, the intersection delay time index fully utilizes big data from navigation software to avoid tedious onsite investigation, has strong scalability in operation and practicability, and provides more reliable theoretical support to urban managers in the decision-making process of intersection reconstruction.
